Chapter Seventeen

Nick was seventeen and what he felt like the prime of his life. His Dad had helped him build his first car, a dark blue coupe with a loud engine, and was sure that the girl in his year Jemma Revell liked him.

Sitting in the living room after Jess had gone to bed, he sat beside his old man, who had a can of beer in his hand, and the football on in the background. He sat and slowly mustered up the courage to ask the question he’d been thinking about all day.

‘Dad?’

‘Yeah?’ his father’s said, as his eyes never came off the TV.

‘There’s a party out at the Rowntree’s farm tonight and me and Mick are planning on heading out.’

‘Yeah?’ His Dad said again, eyes fixed on the game.

‘Any chance I could grab a six-pack for the party?’ he asked and with no idea what his Dad would say next. ‘Mick’s Mum and Dad have bought him some.’

‘Have they now?’ he said, turning his eyes away from the TV.

He sat in silence with the only sound being the commentator’s excitedly talking about the goal on the TV.

‘Sure mate,’ he replied with a small smile, as he drained his can. ‘C’mon.’

He got up off the couch and made his way into the kitchen. Opening the old fridge and looking in, he said, ‘Shit, you’re taking out half my stash,’ as he passed six cans over to Nick, who put them in his backpack.

‘Don’t drive if you're gonna drink that, mate. I’ve seen too many accidents from young blokes on the grog,’

Mick drove his ute, and Nick sat in the passenger seat, swigging from a bottle of rum that Mick had stolen from his parents and stashed in his glove box. Feeling it already start to go to his head, he reached across and turned the rock music up loud.

‘Take it easy Nick,’ Mick said, with a worried look at his friend. He knew he hadn’t drunk many times before and this party was his first big night out.

‘I’m fine,’ he replied, taking another swig of the bottle. ‘Let’s get this party started!’ he yelled out the window into the vacant paddocks.

Mick pulled the handbrake as they turned into the entrance of the farm, with the rear wheels locking, the ute went sideways and slid neatly across the dirt road, and he unengaged it as he headed towards the table drain. Nick yelled out, ‘Shit, nice moves Mick!’

‘Years of practice,’ he laughed, as he gunned the engine down the long dirt driveway into the dark night.

Seeing the glow of lights and fire in the distance, the boys soon came across the small gathering of people out in the paddock. Various cars and utes circled the fires, and some had headlights on to help illuminate the gathering.

The boys grabbed their alcohol from the back of the ute and began to make their way over to the fire drums in the direction of the loud music. Mick turned and spoke. ‘Tonight’s your chance, mate.
